Second , chaplaincy is inherently relational and flourishes when there is a non-specific component to the position . Stephen Pattison argues that the vagueness and general nature of the role , oftentimes without stated outcomes , allows for the chaplain to be present to the needs of a wide range of people . It also allows them to be available in challenging times for a person or organization . 1 These unscripted interactions and engagements are one way chaplaincy ’ s value can be felt in a community . Too often , interactions are based off utility or obligation ; chaplains push against this mold by prioritizing the individual and affirming the inherent value of the person with whom they are interacting . While advantageous , forming these types of relationships and being present on a consistent basis takes intentional time and focus . If this is overdone , a person can experience compassion fatigue or struggle with unhealthy boundaries that blur the line between professional obligation and personal time .
Finally , chaplains are often called on in times of challenge or crisis to serve individuals effected or to address the whole community . Being able to speak words of comfort and reassurance while being a calming presence allows chaplains to serve their schools when in need . It can also create a situation in which the chaplain must compartmentalize their own emotions . This combination can be tiring , requiring the chaplain to be mindful of their own needs during a difficult period . As previously mentioned , all three elements are inherent and to be expected when entering

education chaplaincy ; however , experiencing them can create challenges and stress for a chaplain . With that , let us consider four ways chaplains can sustain themselves in their work .
Wellness Practices for Chaplains
While specific activities that support and sustain someone will always be subjective to the individual , here are four suggestions for chaplains to help with their well-being .
First , affirming and naming the unique joys and challenges of the role can lead to a holistic understanding of the position . Chaplaincy is a wonderful vocation , full of powerful relationships and encouraging moments . Chaplains are given the unique privilege of caring for students , faculty , and staff because of who they are , not what they do , their family background , or where they want to attend college . This allows chaplains to speak against a worldview that suggests our identity is tied
