Strategy # 2 : Identifying and Overriding Scripts in the Classroom
Another strategy for supporting teachers in the transition to teaching is to provide tools to help teachers both recognize and override emotionally conditioned scripts , and in turn , enact more mindful and responsive behaviors when challenging situations arise in the classroom setting . Emotionally conditioned scripts can result from situations that bring about strong negative emotions . For example , let ’ s consider a teacher who was raised with the belief that it is a student ’ s job to listen to and never question a teacher . Based on this belief , a student who doesn ’ t subscribe to this behavior could be perceived as disrespectful . And , if the teacher experiences a student engaging in this type of questioning or challenging behavior , they may label the student as disrespectful . This can then elicit negative emotions , causing the teacher to develop the following script about the student : “ This student is being intentionally disrespectful and is preventing learning in this class .”
