Sarah climbed into her car and started
backing out of the drive when she spotted
Shane Chandler’s fancy truck. She was a little
surprised, but realized she shouldn’t be. It
was only a matter of time before he found his
way over to Mel’s house. Sarah paused,
considering her options. Before she could
decide if she should stop and let Shane know
Melissa wasn’t home or just drive off, he had
blocked her in. Well that answers that, Sarah
thought. She pushed open her door and came
face to face with one of the most gorgeous men
in the county; probably the nearest five for that
matter. “Hello, Shane.”
“Is she home?” He asked. Shane never
was one for small talk.
“Nope.” Sarah said, trying to sound
casual. “Mrs. Chilcot says she’s working at the
Sheriff’s Office. Apparently Joe gave her
Dolly’s old job. And believe me, Jason has a
lot to answer for. I intend to find out why he
didn’t tell me they had a new dispatcher.” She
glanced over the fence and realized Agnes had
retreated to the house already.
Shane scowled. How had Mel moved to
town, taken up residence and gotten a job all
without Shane even knowing she was here?
“Did Agnes know when Mel would be home?”
No way was Sarah going into that
convoluted explanation before she talked to
Mel. “Sometime after three.”
Sarah said
casually. “But I have first dibs. I plan to be
right back here in this driveway at 3:05 and if
you come knocking we won’t be answering.
Mel and I have a lot of catching up to do.”
