fig tree, Jesus offers his own doomsday anal-
ogy. As told in all three of the synoptic Gospel’s,
Jesus introduces his thoughts by voicing the re-
ality that a day will come when the Jerusalem
temple would be destroyed. In reaction to that
cataclysmic prediction, the disciples response is
the same as we who live on the edge of an even
more earth-shaking event; the 2 nd Advent! “Je-
sus, when will this happen, and what will be the
sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
After sharing a number of important indi-
cators alerting the disciples to times and sea-
sons, Jesus both warned and encouraged them
with these words: “Now learn this lesson from
the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and
its leaves come out, you know that summer is
near. Even so, when you see all these things, you
know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell
you, this generation will certainly not pass away
until all these things have happened. Heaven and
earth will pass away, but my words will never
pass away.” Matthew 24:32-35
Have you noticed? The fig tree is putting
out its leaves! For your devotional reading this
week, take some time and reacquaint yourself
with the passages in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and
Luke 21 that remind us that we live in the pro-
phetic moments when Jesus will return!
