6 Coding movement booming across GISD
As the districtwide science,
technology, engineering, arts and
math (STEAM) initiative picks up
momentum its second year, Garland
ISD schools continue to be inspired to
incorporate innovative activities. More
than 60 campuses recently recognized
the global Hour of Code movement
by hosting computer programming
parties. Northlake Elementary School
even live-tweeted its event, which
featured students programming Star
Wars, Minecraft, Angry Birds and
Flappy Bird software and games.
Additionally, more than 10 schools
now offer coding camps and clubs.

In the midst of devastation
left by the Dec. 26 tornado,
a bright spot remains:
communities coming together
to help those in need.
Moments after the storm, first
responders across the area
offered assistance. Donations
also started pouring in, and
those who could not serve or
give passed on information
about relief opportunities,
lost pets, etc. That support
continues to this day, showing
North Texas’ strong spirit.
Garland ISD would like
to thank everyone helping
district families recover. From
city employees, to charitable
organizations, to businesses.
From kind words, to cleaning
debris, to collecting school
supplies for the GRS Giving Place.
All individuals and efforts are
appreciated and invaluable. GISD is
committed to seeing students and
staff through the healing process.
Thanks to your compassion and
generosity, that foundation has
already been laid.
