6 Coding movement booming across GISD As the districtwide science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) initiative picks up momentum its second year, Garland ISD schools continue to be inspired to incorporate innovative activities. More than 60 campuses recently recognized the global Hour of Code movement by hosting computer programming parties. Northlake Elementary School even live-tweeted its event, which featured students programming Star Wars, Minecraft, Angry Birds and Flappy Bird software and games. Additionally, more than 10 schools now offer coding camps and clubs. In partnership with the University of Texas at Dallas’ Computer Science “ Class of 2005 “GISD teachers —music teachers in particular— are second to none. Their encouragement and guidance is a huge reason for my success in Nashville. ” • Country Music Artist • Attended Hillside Academy for Excellence, Austin Academy for Excellence and Garland High School In the midst of devastation left by the Dec. 26 tornado, a bright spot remains: communities coming together to help those in need. Moments after the storm, first responders across the area offered assistance. Donations also started pouring in, and those who could not serve or give passed on information about relief opportunities, lost pets, etc. That support continues to this day, showing North Texas’ strong spirit. Garland ISD would like to thank everyone helping district families recover. From city employees, to charitable organizations, to businesses. From kind words, to cleaning debris, to collecting school supplies for the GRS Giving Place. All individuals and efforts are appreciated and invaluable. GISD is committed to seeing students and staff through the healing process.
