District of Innovation 4 • 1 • 1
Ever heard the term District of Innovation? Wonder what it means for GISD? The Texas Legislature created this opportunity, which gives public school districts more local control to better serve the unique needs of students and communities. For example, state law keeps districts from starting a new school year before the fourth Monday in August. Districts of Innovation, however, have the flexibility to choose an earlier date.
GISD has begun exploring a District of Innovation status. Trustees launched the process with a resolution and then held a public hearing to gain much-needed feedback. The District Education Improvement Council has been tasked with developing a potential innovation plan. Once complete, the public will receive a second opportunity to weigh in before board consideration. To learn more about the potential benefits of becoming a District of Innovation, visit www. garlandisd. net / district-innovation.
I pledge to exercise every day.
Get healthy while helping Garland ISD
The It’ s Time Texas Community Challenge pits cities and school districts against one another to see which has the greatest commitment to healthy living. Students, staff, parents and community members are encouraged to register online at www. ittcommunitychallenge. com. Make sure to select Garland, Rowlett or Sachse as the community when signing up.
Challenge participants can earn points for their city and GISD just by registering. Posting healthy selfies, tracking physical activity and weight loss, hosting fitness-focused events, etc., earn additional points ranging from 50-20,000. The community and school district with the highest total on March 31 will win not only a title, but a cash prize as well.
