GISD Planetarium reopens to rave reviews

An old Garland ISD favorite has been given new life. The GISD Planetarium at Lakeview Centennial High School is now reopened after a complete renovation.
The Planetarium first opened in 1976, serving thousands of students across the district before closing in 2011. Following facility upgrades and an overhaul of aging technology thanks to the 2014 bond program, it’ s back in business.
The relaunched Planetarium continues to serve as a resource for district teachers to take their lessons to the next level. It features a state-of-the-art, 360-degree screened dome with interactive simulations of distant galaxies, the Earth’ s layers, the human skeleton and more.
All third-grade classes in GISD are being invited to visit before the school year ends. Next year, additional grades will be invited, and the district hopes to offer community events in the future as well.
“ It truly is an educational experience like none other,” said Planetarium supervisor Eric Pearce.“ We have the ability to go anywhere on Earth or in the known universe, with stunning highdefinition, 3-D clarity. We currently offer two shows a day with 77 seats each, and would like to bring this experience to all GISD students.”

Class of 2010

GISD gave me the foundation and resilience to tackle and overcome challenges in life. I participated in several extracurricular activities that provided mentorship opportunities between my teachers and me. These relationships have remained active years after graduating and have served me well as I pursue new professional and educational goals. Looking back, I certainly left GISD with more than a diploma.
