Celebrate Literacy for Life Before Summer Break, Garland ISD launched its Literacy for Life initiative, teaming up with Renaissance® to provide students and community members access to literature through myON Reader and myON Books at no cost. The district also issued the myON Summer Reading Challenge, asking students to read at least 15 minutes every day from June 1-Aug. 9. In just the first month, more than 10,000 books were accessed for a total of more than 107,000 minutes read. As students continue to take full advantage of myON’s resources—including books that match varying interests and reading levels and myON News, which delivers age-appropriate news 7 articles daily—the Summer Reading Challenge’s top contenders will receive a Kindle Fire, pizza party and other great prizes this fall. But the goal of GISD’s Literacy for Life initiative is not only to encourage a love of reading in students. We are proud to be the only district in North Texas offering community members 24/7 access to a personalized library via Renaissance®. Help us celebrate this communitywide partnership at the inaugural Literacy for Life event from 11 a.m- 3 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Curtis Culwell Center. Free fun for all ages will include a book walk, book character parade, poetry café, writing challenges and more. We hope to see you there!
