Sisters learn and inspire through
entrepreneurial venture
While most students enjoyed
much-needed rest during summer
break, three Garland ISD sisters spent
the time running a business. Jayla,
Mya and Payton Dean own and
manage Be You Natural Products, a
skin care, bath and jewelry company
they publicly launched in 2015.
“Running a business takes a lot of
effort and hard work,” said Payton.
“I have lots of fun making our
products.”
Payton and her sisters began
whipping up goods in 2013, making
shea body butter for family members.
This experience motivated the
triad to make additional products,
eventually leading to their first public
sales at St. Philip’s Kidpreneur Expo in
2015.
“It makes me feel good to know
people want to buy our products,”
commented Mya. “I like to see the
surprise on adults’ faces when they
find out we are kids.”
The line, which encourages self-
acceptance and natural care, now
includes body bars, scrubs,
tea baths, aromatherapy
jewelry, sleeping masks
and T-shirts. The Deans
sell their homemade
products at festivals,
expos, farmers markets,
pop-up shops and retail
stores across DFW,
Louisiana and
Washington, D.C.

This summer, they got to participate
in the Dallas Farmers Market Young
Entrepreneurship Market program.
“Business is pretty good,” said mom
Daphne Dean. “The girls are very
involved in the decision-making. We
try to debrief after every event. They
create product names, set prices,
help set up booths, count sales, take
payments and more.”
But experience in marketing,
finance and logistics is just one of the
benefits gained.
“This business has impacted them
tremendously. It has empowered
them in many ways, such as
improving their public speaking
abilities and increasing self-
confidence,” Daphne expressed.
“I want them to know that the
sky is the limit. I want them to live
life without any handicaps. In our
household, ‘cannot’ is banned from
our vernacular.”
That positive motivation is evident
in the girls’ outlook on life and the
future.
“Believe in yourself. You can do
anything you set your mind to do,”
said Jayla.
“All of our products make everyone
a better you,” added Mya. “For
the future, we have talked about
publishing a book and having our
own store. That would be really great.”
