Impact the future . Become a substitute teacher .

While the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about many challenges , it has also strengthened our sense of community in Garland ISD and the district ’ s tri-cities . We are all working together to meet each other ’ s social , emotional , academic and material needs .
From extending grace to offering financial or other resources , from lending a listening ear to encouraging one another , we have seen so many bright spots in an otherwise dark time . Nowhere are those positive experiences more prevalent than in education . We all want to see students succeed and overcome any challenges brought about by COVID-19 . For this reason , GISD launched its Super Sub initiative .
In a typical year , the district can enlist the help of more than 800 substitutes when a staff member is absent . Although our substitute pool is the same this year , only a fraction of those individuals are able to assist due to COVID-19 . In the fall , GISD ' s central office administrators started returning to the classroom . Each one has committed a day every week to cover teacher absences .

Last December , the district ’ s Board of Trustees approved an increase that allows substitute teachers to start at $ 100 / day . Retired GISD teachers can make up to $ 135 / day .
“ Being a # GISDSuperSub is more than just covering classes ,” said Chief Leadership Officer Dr . Susanna Russell . “ It ’ s an opportunity to connect . I was blessed [ one week ] to work with a student who reminded me greatly of the dropout I once was . He said he ’ d see me [ the ] next Friday .”
Similar reminiscings of time spent in the classroom and interactions with students can be seen across social media each week . To GISD administrators , the Super Sub initiative not only supports our staff family but also the district ’ s mission of doing what ’ s best for students .
