Resumen: La trepanación es el procedimiento quirúrgico más antiguo conocido, y se remonta al menos al siglo V a. C. en el Nuevo Mundo. Antropólogos e historiadores médicos han estado investigando la trepanación antigua desde mediados del siglo XIX, examinando sus orígenes, evolución y las posibles motivaciones para realizarlos. Perú juega un papel particularmente importante en estas investigaciones, ya que ha producido más cráneos trepanados que el resto del mundo juntos. En 1913, Tello estudió y contribuyó decisivamente a llamar la atención mundial sobre la práctica de la trepanación en el antiguo Perú y específicamente sobre la abundante evidencia encontrada en chullpas y machays de las provincias de Yauyos y Huarochirí.
