Cameron Village Library China Day
On January 13th, Raleigh’s Cameron Village Library invited our CI to host a cultural workshop to welcome the 2014 New
Year, the year of the Horse. The event opened with fan-dancing. CI staffs dressed in folk costumes waved silk fans up and down,
swaying to the melodic tunes of Taihu. All audiences were drawn by the dance’s changing formations, sometimes a blossoming
flower, and sometimes a flowing stream. Following the beautiful opening act, our CI staffs introduced Chinese paper-cutting
and calligraphy. Students used red construction papers to cut the 3D-character of “春” (meaning Spring). Chinese calligraphy
supplies were also prepared for students to learn how to trace and write simple Chinese new year greetings. Most of the
participants expressed that the workshop was their first real encounter with Chinese culture; they were delighted by what
they learned. As one of the largest local libraries, Cameron Village Library receives over 1,300 visitors each day. This event not
only impressed those attended the workshop, it also attracted other library-goers as they watched through the glass wall.
