CI News, Fall 2013 CI News, Fall 2013 Summer 2013 Recap summer has been short but exciting, packed with lots of laughters and memorable moments. During July, our CI led 16 High School students to attend the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp in China. Every year, this Hanban organized camp is much anticipated and very popular among local students and parents. This year, our group went to Jilin and Beijing to be immersed in Chinese language and culture. While in Jilin, known for its ethnic traditions, our students learned about different Chinese minority groups and toured local attractions. At the end of the camp, all camp attendees flew back to Beijing to demonstrate what they had learned through various forms of cultural performances. In the summer of 2013, we successfully organized a study abroad program to Nanjing Normal University (NNU). This year’s program was from May 14 - July 8 and had 22 students attend. The students were from ROTC programs across the country, NC State and Saint Augustine’s University. This year NC State greatly improved the academic requirements of the program. This is one of the largest and most successful study abroad programs at NC State, as some other programs to Asia have been canceled. This year marks the sixth year for this program. The majority of students received six academic credits for their time studying Chinese Language and Culture at NNU. For those students that studied for eight weeks, they received nine credits. During the five week study in China, NNU teachers provided intensive Chinese language training, cultural seminars and discussions during the weekdays. On the weekends, students studied in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Anhui. Intensive language training, cultural lectures, traveling to different cities discussions, paper and journal writings, not only greatly improved the student’s Chinese language ability but also improved the student’s understanding of Chinese culture. They were able to experience “real China” instead of just studying about it in a book. At the conclusion of the program, in the NC State project assessment, 87 percentage of students thought the program was very successful and they would recommend it to others. Several students have seriously considered studying in China in 2014. 2013 NNU Study Abroad Program CI’s Chinese Bridge Camp attendees posing together in front of the Palace of Grand Harmony inside the Forbidden City in Beijing China. top left? Our summer classes helped students continue to practice their Chinese skills and taught them about Chinese culture, society, history, and economics. We offered a Chinese character class which taught the origin and development of Hanzi. top left? 6??? confucius institute newsletter Study abroad students visitsingthe Great Wall of China. bottom left?
