back 2013 SECLA Conference in
NC State University’s Park Shops.
The 3rd annual SECLA Conference was hosted
by our CI on September 14, 2013. Over 100 Chinese
teachers and scholars from seven other CIs attended
the conference. We were happy to have members
from North Carolina State University, University of
South Carolina, University of South Florida, Emory
University, Troy University, Middle Tennessee
State University and Presbyterian College attend
the conference. The conference opened with
remarks by Dr. Ding Jianning, Chinese Director of
NC State CI, and Dr. Li Bailian Li, the Vice Provost of
International Affairs.

Institute at Troy University shared about their
collaboration with their host institute. Both speakers
received many questions on how to incorporate what
they learned at their CI.
In the afternoon, we had a Directors Panel and
a Teachers Panel. The Director’s Panel focused on
“Maintaining Sustainability of Chinese Language
Programs”. The Director’s panelists include Helga
Fasciano, Special Assistant for Global Education from
North Carolina Department of Public Instruction;
Ann Marie Gunter, World Language Consultant from
North Carolina Department of Public Instruction,
Tang Xiaozhong, Yang Yang from NCSU CI to talk
about their experience in elementary, high school,
college, online and HSK programs. Through these
two panels, Directors had new ideas for developing
new programs and teachers were able to collaborate
and share lessons plans and new ideas. There is also
discussion for two new Confucius Classrooms to be
opened in NC and three more schools want to open
the Chinese Proficiency Test, HSK.
This conference was made possible by the
support of Hanban and the Confucius Institute
Headquarters. The SECLA is an important conference

The theme of this conference was “Developing
Chinese Language Programs in Your Community”.
There were two key-note addressed in the
morning. In the first session, John Matthews, Dean
of Curriculum Administration at Central Carolina
Community College talked about how CCCC develops
their Chinese language programs. In the second
session, Dr. Iris Hong Xu, Director of Confucius
and Shi Kun, Director of Confucius Institute from
University of South Florida.
The Teacher’s Panel shared experience and best
practices for K-20 Chinese Language Programs and
online programs. We had Chang Ming from Middle
Tennessee State University CI, Chen Qiang from Enloe
