CI News, Fall 2013 CI News, Fall 2013 2013 NC State & China: A University Wide Reception Faculty, staff and students came together on October 8th to celebrate NC State’s international partnerships and collaborations with China at the event, “NC State & China: University Wide Reception.” The event was sponsored by the College of Education, Confucius Institute and the Office of International Affairs. The fall reception focused on China and brought over 100 people who began the reception by networking, eating a Chinese lunch catered by Taipei 101, and viewing 13 posters presented by individuals across the university doing research and programming with China. Reception attendees heard about NC State’s overall relationship with China from Vice Provost for International Affairs, Dr. Bailian Li. College of Education Dean, Dr. Jayne Fleener, shared the College’s vision and strategy for internationalizing teacher education, a field in which they are leading the way across the state and nation. Dr. Hiller Spires shared her research with China in a talk titled “Connecting with Teachers in China through the New Literacies Collaborative.” Dr. Jianning Ding, Confucius Institute Chinese Director & Visiting Professor from Nanjing Normal University and Anna Lamm, Confucius Institute U.S. Director, spoke about the many programs the Confucius Institute has to offer. The China Reception featured two special cultural performances. Raleigh Garrison Smith and Yongjin K. Smith, NC State students learning Chinese, performed a song showcasing their Chinese language skills and demonstrating their talents on the guitar and drum. Tai Chi was also demonstrated by Confucius Institute staff and visiting scholars Dr. Xiaozhong Tang, Xiaowen Yang and NC State College of Education student Yaxin Zheng. Chinese Experience with Nanjing Normal University Our CI partner university, Nanjing Normal University (NNU), sent a delegation of 25 leaders, faculty, staff and students to NC State from October 13th-14th. The delegation included Vice President Miao Jiandong, 6 Deans and Directors, 4 faculty, 3 staff and 11 students. Delegation representatives spanned several disciplines ranging from music, humanities and social sciences, business, foreign languages and international affairs. While at NC State, visitors from NNU hosted a Talent Recruitment Workshop at Hunt Library, students performed a traditional Chinese folk cultural performance at Thompson Theatre, the delegation celebrated the academic partnership with NC State and a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed to further expand the partnership. NNU delegation leaders met with the President of the University of North Carolina system, Tom Ross and Chancellor Randy Woodson on Monday, October 14th to sign a new MOU to formalize an academic partnership with Financial Mathematics and Operations Research. The new MOU is an expansion of an official partnership between NC State and NNU that dates back to 2006.
