ZOOMING DOWN a Los Angeles freeway , a Tesla operating on autopilot crashes into a fire truck parked in a lane to attend to an accident . The “ driver ” walks away stunned . Wired magazine reported the Tesla manual clearly stated the autopilot “ cannot detect all objects and may not brake / decelerate for stationary vehicles … especially … driving over 50 mph .”
The Tesla ’ s autopilot programing makes assumptions so that it can operate in the real world . It uses a bias that stationary objects are not likely to be encountered on an uncongested freeway . Your brain is wired to utilize its own nonconscious autopilot to process eleven million bytes of information per second while it only consciously processes forty bytes . Using your own biases , your brain ’ s autopilot is faster than a supercomputer , but for leaders under stress , it often dismisses important information . The brain doesn ’ t come with a manual and warnings .
