THE SESSIONS

SESSION BLOCK 1 Thursday , 3:15pm-4:30pm
Activated Script Analysis : Strategies for illuminating the script analysis classroom Track : College / University Presenter : Elizabeth Brendel Horn Location : Crowne Plaza – McKinley – Third Floor
Script analysis is a crucial skill for undergraduate theatre students to develop , but can often be viewed as boring and monotonous . Activating script analysis through creative expression and devised theatre dispels the notion of the script analysis process as an isolated pen-to-paper task . In this interactive workshop , participants will explore strategies for making the script analysis process engaging , playful , collaborative , and meaningful to theatre students .
Creating Devised Sensory Theatre Tracks : Applied Theatre , Professional Theatre Presenter : Sarah Gordin Location : Crowne Plaza – Yosemite – Third Floor
Sarah Gordin ( she / her ) has recently produced and co-directed a sensory theatre production titled " Season ' s Magical Adventures : a sensory play !" through her theatre company , Philly Children ' s Theatre . The play toured around Philadelphia for over ten performances . The focus of the play was to create theatre that was able to reach children with multiple disabilities ( with a focus on Autism and Cerebral Palsy ) and their families . There were multiple parts to this project , that went beyond just the show component . We had multiple community partnerships with schools and organizations in Philadelphia , as well as a partnership with the Creative Arts and Restorative Education Program at the Julia de Burgos Elementary School in North Philadelphia . The students at the school created all of the textile elements that were used in the production with the audience members . Additionally , the students illustrated a bi-lingual storybook written by our playwright , Juana Parral , that was published online and given to each audience member at the end of the performance which told the story of the play . We also held multiple workshops with the organizations we partnered with to make sure we were receiving child input into the play , along with our consultants on the project . The session will be part workshop / part presentation / part question and answer period . The first 45 minutes of the session will be an exploration of what sensory theatre is and what it can be through play with textiles and different props that were used in the Philly Children ' s Theatre production . The second half of the session will be more about the specific project , community partnerships , and how to start creating accessible work in this way , even with limitations such as budget .
