Latinx students need to see their stories reflected in the plays they are asked to read and the shows produced by their schools . Join AATE Board Member Michael Avila and Texas Theatre educator Omar Leos to explore and identify the various ways that Latinx voices can be amplified in the classroom and on stage . Participants will be asked to engage in a series of hands on activities , facilitated discussion , and resource sharing to discover new and innovative methods for diversifying curriculum and production work .
Calling all Education Directors : A Roundtable Conversation / Workshop for the Leaders of Theatres , Departments , Programs and the like Tracks : Professional Theatre , Research / Scholarship , Youth Theatre Presenters : Mitch Mattson , Ashley Forman & Anthony Jackson Location : Alpine 2 ( Lucerne Level ) – Swissotel Chicago
Directors of Education from theatre companies , community organizations , and schools share challenges , strategies , and hopes for the coming year . This session will include a roundtable discussion as well as on-yourfeet activities that will allow participants to connect . Topics of conversation will come from the participants . What is needed in the room can be talked about in the room . Topics may include : programming , management , training , budgeting , partnerships , strategic planning , EDIA efforts , and / or the future of our field . Come network with people in your field and connect with those who share similar challenges and responsibilities . This session is sponsored by the Professional Theatre Network .
Five Neglected Strategies for Teaching Drama Track : PreK-8 Presenters : Karen L . Erickson & Danielle Kerr Location : Currents ( Concourse ) – Swissotel Chicago
Join us for this hands-on workshop and discussion with Karen L . Erickson and Danielle Kerr . Building upon their previous workshop with AATE , Karen and Danielle will guide participants through an exploration of lesser used teaching strategies in drama , with an emphasis on practical application . Through a combination of presentation , discussion , and hands-on practice , participants will deepen their understanding of the following strategies : Compare and Contrast , Graduated Difficulty , Pair Coaching , Mystery , and / or Multi-Sensory Experiences . For each strategy , Karen or Danielle will demonstrate a lesson from Ms . Erickson ’ s curriculum that utilizes the strategy , with examples selected from grade levels K-8 , followed by discussion of possible adaptations for other grade levels and learning situations if there are adaptations needed . After each demo , the floor will open for participants to discuss the strategy , give examples from their own work , and brainstorm how they could apply it in their classrooms . The goal of this session is to help participants bring unique teaching strategies into their classrooms , address the range of learning preferences and needs among their students , and create a space where every student is engaged , challenged and uplifted .
