An effective and engaged space for adult learning influences and informs teaching practice with youth . A dynamic , supportive , and critical space allows educators and teaching artists to develop craft , stretch and explore , engage and persist , observe , and reflect ( Harvard Project Zero , 2003 ), specifically when embedding new equity practices in the classroom . Together , we will explore : What power is at play in educational spaces ? How does this impact professional learning and ignite or stunt growth in personal pedagogical practice ? How can creating a responsive , brave , and democratic space for adult learners ( teachers and teaching artists ) develop and sustain Culturally and Historically Responsive Teaching and Learning ( Muhammad , 2023 )? Utilizing a framework for embedding Culturally and Historically Responsive Teaching and Learning ( Muhammad , 2023 ), this session asks conference attendees to develop a plan to embed equity , diversity , and inclusion strategies into their classrooms using Participatory Action Research ( PAR ). PAR uses inquiry to identify a problem of practice in the classroom , insert different strategies / approaches in the curriculum to alter / impact the student experience , analyze the student data collected , and then identify how the project shifted pedagogical practice and name elements to consistently and pervasively weave into all classes . In this workshop , you will learn about the Connected Arts Network , a national model for teacher action rooted in National Theatre Standards , EDI ( Equity , Diversity , and Inclusion ), and SEL ( Social-Emotional Learning ), and hear examples of theatre teachers ' PAR projects . Additionally , session attendees will participate in a wondering workshop to develop their own inquiry questions related to EDI and engage in two PLC protocols to develop critical analysis , teacher autonomy , and reflection . Finally , you will leave with some foundational skills , strategies , or approaches to embed in your professional learning spaces that focus on “ understanding the dynamics rooted in issues of power , and do things which counter them ” ( Adair & Howell , 2001 ).
