Lawrence Grimm ( University of Michigan LEO Lecturer , School of Music , Theatre and Dance ) will share captivating case study results on how a two-day Guest Artist visit from improvisational duo Slotnick and Katz ( Lookingglass Theatre , Edinburgh Fringe ) transformed his Chekhov Scene Study class from rendering surface and rote presentations to an imaginative mastery over both narrative and character in improvisationally inspired devised pieces . Chekhov ’ s work framed life “ as it really is ” now join in on a discovery which mirrors that principle with acting “ as it should really be ”. A hands-on participatory workshop led by Lawrence Grimm with former students modeling class activities , includes mini-performance by the inimitable improv duo , Slotnick and Katz .

In this interactive workshop , participants will investigate culturally responsive , student-centered methods of assessment for learning in the drama classroom . Key questions include : What are culturally responsive and student-centered methods of assessment ? Why might we assess in these ways ? How can we adapt these methods to our diverse learning contexts ? What are the challenges and potential successes of culturally responsive and student-centered methods of assessment in the drama classroom ? From when you craft the learning objectives , through developing the summative assessment task , you need to consistently employ student-centered , culturally responsive approaches . Consider : What do the students bring to the creative experience ? What are their aesthetic sensibilities ? What do they consider “ good ” theatre ? This workshop is for theatre educators at all levels , though primarily geared towards the PreK-12 classroom .

The delineation between the natural world and humans is a colonial construct . Adrienne Maree Brown reminds us , “ How we are at the small scale is how we are at the large scale . The patterns of the universe repeat at scale .” Bayo Akomolafe names , “ We are relationships . We are the Earth touching itself , in a way .” This 75- minute applied multimedia theatre workshop approaches conversations around climate change from a place of embodied curiosity and digital archive . We invite you to experience this workshop designed for middle-schoolaged students and then brainstorm how you might apply it to the communities you work in ; it serves as an exciting tool for intergenerational conversations around climate change . Through embodied practice , meditative writing , digital storytelling , and community collaboration , we explore what it means to find nature in our bodies and place our bodies in nature . No previous experience necessary ; a laptop or iPad and a phone with a camera will be helpful but not necessary .
