November’ s Academic Venue Awards will take place at The Great Hall, Queen Mary University of London, a venue with a rich history and bright future
he inaugural Academic Venue Awards take place at The Great Hall, Queen Mary University of London( QMUL). The venue was not picked by accident, and boasts a rich history and elegant finishing befitting for such an event. The venue can accommodate 778 guests, with 366 on the ground floor seating system and 412 in the upper mezzanine. Dean Drury, manager, The Great Hall, QMUL, explains the history of the venue:“ The Great Hall, QMUL, was originally part of a much larger complex called the People’ s Palace. Originally built in 1887, it was rebuilt in 1936 after it was destroyed by fire.
There are in excess of 1,000 event spaces in the UK that are termed‘ Academic Venues’. It includes universities, schools, colleges, and libraries.
“ The People’ s Palace aim was to bring arts and culture to the people of the East End of London. This ethos is something we are passionate about and it continues to be used for various performances at the weekends.” What, though, does Drury believe makes The Great Hall, QMUL a suitable venue for the Academic Venue Awards?“ The Great Hall, QMUL, has a rich history yet is sometimes overlooked due to its location. It hosts a number of awards ceremonies each year and it will be amazing to showcase this stunning theatre to a wider audience.” Although rebuilt in 1936, the venue was refurbished in 2012, with many of its art deco, 1930s features restored
