Many who have been unable to find a creative outlet for their creative talents these past 18 months have used the time to upskill

In the Loop

Managing editor , Paul Colston ur cover image of the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop is testament to the importance of harnessing innovation to our meetings industry to help drive us forward to the other side of the pandemic and beyond .
Of course , Elon Musk ’ s Boring Company has had the power of serious investment behind it as it has engineered a stunning transit system under the LVCC , sure to speed up business in greater comfort and style , too .
Las Vegas is a recurring theme in this issue . And why not , given it is the big global event capital , leading the way back with new hygiene systems and , most importantly , leading also in bringing all sides of our fantastic industry together to build meetings momentum in the face of today ’ s challenges .
IMEX America , as we hear in our show preview from CEO Carina Bauer , stands ready to host an industry homecoming in
Las Vegas in October and , in the words of Bob the Builder , ‘ The excitement is building !’
Not all innovation is built on deep pockets , as our items on Vaibhav Jain ’ s Hubilo , Johnny Bourfarhat ’ s Hopin and Reggie Aggarwal ’ s Cvent success stories all show . Yes , today the PE houses may be piling in , but that is a tribute to the drive of these start-ups and enterpreneurs who have built what are now today ’ s event tech stars through creative endeavour and not being afraid to risk failure .
Many of those who have been unable to find an outlet for their creative conferencing talents in the past 18 months have used the time to upskill and train and these people will be much needed with their new and improved talents and skills as the industry returns and attempts to fill the gaps left by the sector ’ s haemorrhaging of staff . Michael Jones ’ article exploring the industry education conundrum hopefully will provoke some more thoughts on the ways to do that . And , as minds also turn to the return of incentive travel , I can certainly commend the delights of Malta , subject of my first press visit abroad of the year . Do read about the amazing MCC building and its Knights of St John heritage in our new regular rubric on venue architecture ( p . 50 ).
So , let us learn to live with the new situation and continue to find innovative solutions in the manner that our industry is renowned for .
I hope to be seeing as many of you in person in the weeks and months ahead as our valuable industry trade shows and major forums return , starting with Conventa , International Confex , IMEX America , ICCA and IBTM World .
