CHRISTCHURCH:
Where innovation meets hospitality in New Zealand ' s business events capital
Three and a half years since Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre opened its doors, New Zealand ' s South Island capital has emerged as one of the Asia-Pacific region ' s most compelling business events destinations. With recent international recognition, world-class infrastructure, and a collaborative approach that extends across the entire city, Christchurch is redefining what delegates can expect from a conference destination.
A city transformed Christchurch has undergone a remarkable renaissance, emerging as a vibrant, progressive city that defies economic headwinds with sustained population growth and business development. What sets it apart is its inherent walkability – a rarity amongst modern cities. Conference organisers and delegates can access venues, accommodation, restaurants, gardens, and cultural attractions all within the heart of the city, creating an environment where networking extends naturally beyond the conference hall.
The city ' s strategic focus on growth sectors – technology, health, education, science, and agribusiness – positions it as a hub for innovation and global impact. From health tech and aerospace to agritech, cleantech, and Antarctic research, Christchurch ' s collaborative ecosystem connects business, research, and government in ways that deliver tangible value to conference delegates and their organisations.
Te Pae Christchurch: Recognition and excellence At the centre of this business events boom stands Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, which recently claimed the title of Oceania ' s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre at the prestigious World Travel Awards 2025. This international recognition was reinforced by the centre ' s Gold Certification in the International
Association of Convention Centres Quality Standards programme – the highest standard available, placing Te Pae amongst an elite group of just 30 convention centres worldwide.
These accolades reflect more than architectural achievement. Te Pae ' s success stems from a deeply embedded commitment to sustainability, innovation, and cultural authenticity. In 2024, it became the first convention centre internationally to achieve Toitū Net Carbon Zero status, whilst also securing Toitū Gold Certification – New Zealand ' s highest sustainability accreditation. From diverting food scraps to community compost programmes to reimagining the environmental impact of conference catering, sustainability is woven into every operational decision.
Infrastructure advantage Christchurch offers a unique proposition for large-scale international conferences: the ability to co-locate events across multiple world-class venues. Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre and Christchurch Town Hall sit just minutes apart, connected by a pleasant walk through Victoria Park. This configuration proved its worth at the 10th IWA-ASPIRE and Water New Zealand Conference & Expo in September 2025, which welcomed 2,494 delegates from 50 countries, featuring 13 education streams, over 200 presentations, and 273 exhibition stands across both venues.
Dr Marion Savill, conference co-chair and New Zealand chair of the IWA, praised the seamless experience:“ Everyone loved the locations, the relaxed New Zealand way, and the content. I kept hearing ' this is a fabulous conference '. The format demonstrated how Christchurch can accommodate complex, largescale events without the capacity constraints of a single venue.”
This infrastructure advantage is set to expand significantly. Opening in April 2026, One New Zealand Stadium will add substantial business events capacity to the city centre. The multifunctional venue features the 1,150-squaremetre Ōtautahi Lounge( capacity up to 892 for cocktail functions), 23 private suites ideal for breakout sessions, and The Lancaster – a 2,750-square-metre“ blank canvas” space suitable for exhibitions and banquets.
