Asia focus Sentosa seizes the summit Sentosa is home to a diverse array of leisure offerings but is increasing its appeal to business travellers. The hosting of the DPRK-USA Singapore Summit in Sentosa in June 2018 brought the island much global attention, and demonstrated the island’s excellent “turnkey” capabilities in hosting high-stature events at short notice. Bloomberg’s New Economy Forum was another global event hosted in Sentosa last year (November). Recently, the Sentosa infrastructure ‘hardware’ was bolstered by Far East Hospitality bringing an additional 839 rooms across three hotels (Village Hotel at Sentosa, The Outpost Hotel, and The Barracks Hotel), to add to the more than 3,500 existing rooms in Sentosa. MBS add-ons As Marina Bay Sands moves into its ninth year of operations, its property-wide reinvestment strategy continues. Sands Expo and Convention Centre continue to upgrade their MICE tech inventory and, in order to meet the growing trend of sustainability and wellness in the industry, MBS has introduced ‘Meet Green Live Well’ packages, which are top-up options to the existing green meetings package. Clients can add a wellness component to their events with additional elements including a healthy snack bar, special rates on Sunrise Yoga. Three of senior management sales staff became the first in Singapore to receive the Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate (HMCC), a course which equips them with knowledge of key healthcare disciplines and current regulatory topics. This is designed to assure pharmaceutical, biotech and medical clients that their event is in qualified hands. In the hotel, all 2,561 rooms and suites were refurbished in 2017 and more dining concepts introduced to an already packed menu of outlets. MBS has also moved quickly to position itself as a leading Asian entertainment destination by hosting global red carpet events – such as the most recent Captain Marvel fan event on 14 February. That followed the Avengers: Infinity War red carpet fan event in 2018. ArtScience Museum also became the first museum in Asia Pacific to be awarded the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification under the ‘Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance’ rating system. Two significant green events in 2018 were the Schneider Electric Global Innovation Summit and the 7th Responsible Business Forum on Sustainable Development (RBF) (11-12 October), organised by Global Initiatives in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The MBS team took part in some sustainable food storytelling by developing specially created ‘Earth-friendly’ menus for those events, which signified a step-up from our standard green meeting Harvest Menu, which offers locally sourced food and beverage options to reduce Food Miles. TAO in the house The TAO Group is opening three entertainment and dining concepts at MBS in 2019. MARQUEE Nightclub and AVENUE will open on 12 April and in May, respectively, followed by KOMA, a Japanese restaurant set to open within the year. MARQUEE will be the biggest club in Singapore - spanning over 2,300sqm and will include a Ferris Wheel.
