“ The United States remains the market to watch – not because it is the largest, but because it signals where our industry is heading next”

Design for delegate decision making: an invisible force

M any of you may be reading this

prior to attending IMEX America and it is an edition where we are sharpening our focus on a selection of North American destinations, and looking at how they illustrate the wide variety of offers on that vast meetings market.
From the pharma and academic powerhouse of Boston on the East coast of the US, through Cincinnati, to the spectacular sounds and exotic food of New Orleans in the south, and on up north, by northwest to reveal the charms and potential of Portland, Oregon, with much more in between.
PCMA’ s CEO Sherrif Karamat identifies succinctly the power of the US market to lead and innovate in his column( p15):“ The United States remains the market to watch – not because it is the largest, but because it signals where our industry is heading next.” He adds that business events strategists in the US are not simply weathering the current moment – they are redesigning the model built for it.
Indeed, North America leads global direct spending on events with $ 487.7bn, ahead of Asia $ 352.8bn and Western Europe($ 328bn). Ours is not a side industry; it is, as Sherrif says,“ a core engine of the economy”.
Another redesigned model is the IMEX America show itself, where‘ Design Matters’ is the main Talking Point theme this year.
CEO Carina Bauer tells us, on p42, that design is one of the most often overlooked drivers of business success and human connection and references a recent IMEX report which concluded good design isn’ t simply about aesthetics, but the invisible force shaping how people feel, behave and make decisions.
Whether by accident or by design, we hope to see some of you at the IMEX America show in Vegas and to hear via any channel what your designs on the meetings future are. n
