“ The recent shooting at the Washington Hilton event attended by US president Trump again illustrated how fragile event security can be.”

Leader

Safety first and relying on resilience

Managing editor, Paul Colston

T he Iran war situation and its knock

on effect on the global economy is ongoing and has curtailed major international events in the region, as well as hitting air travel plans further afield. While there are surely many more twists and turns in this saga, it is clear that, once again, the event industry’ s resilience is on display. As during Covid, planners have been doing their best to reschule rather than cancel, although they have been at the mercy of the effect on air travel and event insurance. Not only are flights being suspended in the region, but the price of fuel has led to many routes being deemed unprofitable.
As the SITE survey shows on p48, there are destinations raising their business profiles as safer havens, and Europe and Canada are two such destinations in increasing demand as planners put safety first.
Let us hope for a more positive turn of events in the Gulf and in all countries affected by war and security issues.
The recent shooting at the Washington Hilton during the correspondents dinner attended by US president Trump again illustrated how fragile event security can be. Many people in a confined space is an environment for panic when things go bad. In this case the security services did their jobs. An incident to remind us that crisis management plans need to be kept up to date. On p37 Chris Lewis and Dominic Keogh share some key advice on preparing crisis protocols for major events. And BCD ' s Mikael Ek also addresses crisis management from the agency side on p26.
Away from war zones and assassination scenarios we look at the more relaxed environment of cruising, p54-55, and how its popularity is adding an ever more attractive and professional option for events. Setting high store on security and a closed and concentrated environment, an event on the sea can also bring more destinations within range and deliver good results for a captive audience.
With our industry associations sharing their wisdom and insights across a range of topics close to planners’ hearts, we hope this issue whets your appetite for more quality content at IMEX in Frankfurt. Do look up the CMW team if you are attending. n
