“ What’ s the point of the European Accessibility Act? More legislation adding to the burden of event professionals or something more interesting?”

Viva Espana, Taylor Swift and 3-day eventing in Vienna

O ne of the main focuses this

November, certainly in Europe, is the annual IBTM World trade show for our meetings industry, so we celebrate that with an extended feature on Spain’ s diverse offer for conferencing and events that extends well beyond Madrid and Barcelona and, always, with the emphasis on sustainability. Perhaps a metaphor for the country’ s resurgence for MICE is the highspeed rail link system( Spain has the second largest high-speed rail network in the world). The first high-speed line was opened back in 1992 connecting the cities of Madrid, Córdoba and Seville and the network has since been extended to link to Cadiz and Malaga too, among other destinations.
Paul Cook, p51, tackles a different kind of accessibility, asking‘ What’ s the point of the
European Accessibility Act( EAA)?’ He thinks it most likely could become something more interesting than another piece of legislation adding to the burden of event and hospitality professionals. The EAA became law on 28 June and only mico-enterprises with under 10 employees and sub- € 2m annual turnover are generally exempt, and Paul notes it focuses on functional access( digital ticketing, information clairty, payment systems) but does little to address the sensory and cognitive barriers that can affect the real-world experience of attending conferences.
The fast changing client demands in the incentive sector are analysed in the latest Incentive Travel Index, and highlighted by Padraic Gilligan on p15. Gen Z would rather see Taylor Swift than Hawai’ I being one expert view.
And we have our international correspondent Simon George filing a report from a recent industry show in Vietnam, taking some masterclasses in Paris and checking out a special Vienna property for‘ 3-day eventing’.
We also have our usual Wellness contribution from Caesars Entertainment and global PCO Kenes sharing a sustainable story from the forest, and much more besides …
Do look up the CMW team in Barcelona at IBTM and keep your experiences, news and views coming to share with our global meetings community. n
