The US keeping its meetings motor running despite political headwinds

Managing editor, Paul Colston

O ur focus in this issue, with the

mighty IMEX America show returning to Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas in early October, is the equally mighty North American market. Despite strong political headwinds, we showcase some key city destinations in the US and Canada and find out where the investment is, what the current offer for conferencing looks like and how they’ re meeting the global challenges. Behind the political rhetoric, the figures look promising.
Some Canadian destinations are winning good US business too, with Montreal’ s Palais des congrès reporting seven major US events in town this summer – up from one last year.
There are giant global events in the pipeline set to showcase the USA ' s vast event experience and potential, including: 2025 Ryder Cup, America250, FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Washington DC – a city that has come under fire from the White House for its crime record – nevertheless reports nine first time international association meetings this year, although the CVB is forecasting a dip in international business travel for this year, with a rebound projected for 2027.
Philadelphia, the city where the US Constitution was ratified at a convention, certainly benefitted from hosting eight FIFA Club World Cup matches this summer, welcoming 346,000 fans to the city. While wary of the effects of the tariffs issue on incoming events, the CVB says the outlook is“ strong” with the bureau’ s CSO saying:“ We are actively leveraging the 2026 spotlight to keep our pipeline full.”
We also take the temperature in Chicago and NYC where we meet the tourism authority and CVB’ s new president & CEO Julie Coker to hear about her strategic approach.
This edition also offers insights into the agency world with Sledge, green events with Booth Exhibits and a Wellness section courtesy of Caesars Entertainment.
Our destination coverage includes our international correspondent re-visiting Prague and an in-depth look at Birmingham and its renaissance for conferencing.
I also recommend on p67 RAI Amsterdam ' s tale of‘ liver legacy’ and how its recent international liver congress spread the word and health awareness among the local population. n
