national trend of detaching from fossil fuels . Major event venue Edmonton EXPO Centre has more solar panel coverage than any other building in Canada . The city as a whole is building a reputation for developing sustainable tech , emerging as a global contender in hydrogen production and carbon capture technology .
Eco-tech focus Fittingly , Edmonton ’ s appeal in events is often tied to this sustainable tech expertise . There are two major renewable technology conferences in Edmonton : Canadian Hydrogen Convention – Canada ’ s largest hydrogen event , attracting over 8,000 attendees to the Edmonton Convention Centre every year . capture technology .
The city ’ s drive for sustainability is shared by the tourism board . Explore Edmonton has achieved ISO 20121 certification , and can work with organisers to reduce negative impacts , connect with local suppliers and make environmentally sound decisions .
Edmonton has two leading venues , The Edmonton Convention Centre and Edmonton EXPO Centre , with expansions underway . The EXPO Centre has completed the first phase of its expansion project , installing 5,745 solar panels that generate 33 % of the venue ’ s yearly energy consumption ( the most coverage of any building in Canada ). Compared to the rest of the country , Edmonton is unusually sunny , receiving 2,299 hours of sun per year ( London , by contrast , receives 1,481 ).
Beyond capturing solar power , Explore Edmonton is pushing forward many other clean initiatives . In collaboration with Edmonton EXPO Centre , the city succeeded in diverting 475,000kg of waste in 2023 as part of a recycling programme . The EXPO Centre is also sourcing its produce locally , with $ 500,000 of its purchases in 2023 made to nearby Alberta producers .
Within the EXPO Centre itself , two major installations have occurred . The first is an ORCA – an onsite aerobic digester that breaks down food waste via natural biological processes . Secondly , the venue has entered the world of beekeeping , housing two beehives with over 50,000 bees in peak season , adding to local biodiversity and providing a food source .
On the frontier of Canada ’ s wilderness , Edmonton is perhaps lesser-known than the country ’ s major cities . However , the Albertan capital is an economic force – with a GDP of $ 68bn , Edmonton isn ’ t far behind energy powerhouse and tourist hotspot Calgary , at $ 84bn . n
