Sustaining our planet and our interest

I n this issue we look at how two big conferencing destinations – Spain and Switzerland – are driving sustainability initiatives and thereby promoting new options for organisers who want their big events to have a positive impact on both the environment and socially .

Glenn Hansen , CEO of Reduce2 . com , explains both the importance and the complexities of calculating the carbon footprint of corporate events . Do you rely on your supply chain to provide specific information , or are some things ‘ out of bounds ’? Delve deeper on p . 15 .
And , PCMA CEO Sherrif Karamat warns against ‘ overshooting ’ the sustainability mark on p . 17 .

We also reflect , of course , on the biggest ever IMEX America show which reunited many of our eventprof colleagues in October in Las Vegas . This year ’ s show – in addition to reinforcing the power of face-to-face – had a clear focus on innovation , experimentation and high-quality learning via platforms such as the Inspiration Hub , a Wellbeing Wheel , the Google Xi CoLaboratory and a dedicated IMEX | EIC People and Planet Theatre . Add to that the options for ‘ fireside chats ’ and a ‘ Break Free ’ Immersive Theatre . Check out our Gallery on p . 59 .
Our reporters check on some selected destinations fast evolving their meeting and events offer . I visited Korea with a delegation of association event planners recently and we got to see the latest in technology on show in
Incheon ’ s Smart City and how that technology can be harnessed for events . Seoul and Busan were on the itinerary , too , so do read all about it on pages 31-33 .
Ramy Salameh heads to Vienna , p42-43 , that powerhouse host for association conferences , and he certainly made his own head spin on the Big Ferris Wheel , as well as turning our heads to a whirl of ideas for after-hours activity and incentives there .
Catie Owen opens another of her Canada files with a feature on exploring options for those intrepid delegates keen to tap into Indigenous heritage and lifestyles as part of their conference education .
