‘ There is an increased sense of yearning to give back and to take the best experiences from hosting cultures ’

Leader

O ur ‘ end of 2022 , start of 2023 ’ issue is packed with three supplements , and Indigenous cultures , as our front cover shows , feature prominently .

Tapping into heritage and old cultures can open out a whole new perspective for a conference delegate . I perceive an increased sense of yearning to give back and to take the best experiences from hosting cultures , and Canada and Australia ’ s opening up of their indigenous heritages is something planners can tap into to give that delegate experience the unique wow factor , while hopefully putting something back into society and supporting and understanding some of the deeper tones of old culture and heritage .

2023 : in with the ( best of the ) old … and the new

Managing editor , Paul Colston
It reminds me of a Royal visit many years ago to a collective farm in Bulgaria where the local farmers were urged to modernise and use more machinery and chemicals to increase crop yields by the visiting VIP . A subsequent re-visit many years later found the advice turned on its head with the same visiting royal advocating a return to less intensive farming and the abandonment of pesticides and various fertilisers . The bemused farmers replied that that was how they had been working decades earlier !
The lesson is that , maybe there are things that can be learned from our cultural elders , but somehow merged into a modern approach that can harness the best from the past to the new technology and ways of the present .
I ’ m pleased to say that the undertones of most of our features this time are mostly positive currents and testament to the resilience of our industry and the faith in the rebirth of the power of face to face .
Enjoy the issue and very best New Year wishes from the CMW team as we move into 2023 with our big hopes and plans . Let us continue to learn from each other along the way !
