Sony projects Orientarium in Łódź
WE LOOK AT HOW A ZOO IN POLAND TAPPED INTO SONY TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE ITS COMMUNICATIONS WITH NOT ONLY ITS NATURAL ATTRATIONS AND THE PUBLIC , BUT FOR CONFERENCE DELEGATES TOO
A new tourist destination that opened earlier this year , the Orientarium in Lódz , Poland , now boasts Europe ’ s largest zoo and exhibition centre , complete with conference facilities powered by the latest Sony technology .
The Orientarium showcases the flora and fauna of southeast Asia and is part of a complex equipped with the latest devices , including Sony Bravia 4K monitors , laser projectors and tablets , with integrated digital signage and smart workplace management software ( called TEOS ).
Staff can now centrally manage their devices , signage and communications , generating and publishing / scheduling content with a click ( even using a mobile phone ) to any screen in the building .
The smart system is used to provide all visitor information around the Orientarium , high-tech conference and room booking capabilities , and enables advertising opportunities at specific times in specific locations .
The displays , combined with smart management tools , have freed up staff time , optimise space , reduce energy – all helping to create a new visitor experience .
Delegates at the Orientarium can attend their meeting and then enjoy viewing a 26-metre-long underwater tunnel with 1,300 species of fish and 35 species of animals . There are Sumatran orangutans , record-size gavial crocodiles and the largest Indian elephant in Europe in the complex .
The conference centre is connected to the Orientarium by a glass walkway .

The Sony solutions provide visitors with information not only about the Orientarium ’ s residents , the animals ’ feeding times and habits , as well as their sponsors , but messages can also displayed on monitors around the corridors and carry information about the city and its attractions for delegates keen to find out what else is going in Lódz .
The Orientarium ’ s 10 Sony VPL-PHZ series laser projectors are used in both the exhibition and the office area and the monitors also show the timetables for MPK Lódz trams .
In the complex ’ s conference centre , a plenary room can accommodate 350 people . The space can be rearranged into two or three smaller rooms depending on the needs .
TEOS players have been installed in all six lifts , allowing Digital Signage content to be displayed . The published content is managed via a web browser , which means that it can be changed using any device with access to the complex ’ s local network .
TEOS also provides a diagnostic tool which can be used to remotely to check what a particular monitor is displaying and whether it is working properly .
And it is not only sales sharks to look out for at Orientarium , PL-PHZ60 projectors installed at the side entrance to the shark aquarium deliver images with excellent parameters with a brightness at the level of 6,000 lumens .
“ Before we opened the Orientarium , our zoo had several multimedia screens working completely independently of each other . Managing them was quite a challenge ,” says Dr Arkadiusz Jaksa , chairman of the Board of the Municipal Zoological Garden in Lódz . “ The TEOS system makes it possible to offer customers specific advertising times in specific locations . The built-in content editor helps create any message visible to visitors – even using a mobile phone . “ At the same time , the scheduling mechanism ensures that content is fully automated , making it easy to invite people to events .”
