Leader
Ready to spring back into action
Managing editor , Paul Colston
fter some tough winter months , those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are seeing the green shoots of spring at last and some new signs for the steady return of our live events industry . As our special section on Australasia also illustrates , in-person events are nicely back in action there , albeit nationally to date .
So , we all await the lifting of international travel restrictions . Our industry doesn ’ t do ‘ sitting around and waiting ’, but is pro-active and busy putting together plans and safety regimes for government and its agencies to act on . IATA has also put forward its ideas for an international Travel Pass where details of traveller vaccinations and necessary documents for crossing borders and meeting individual state requirements can be stored .
In this issue we also reflect on other initiatives and ideas driving the changing kaleidoscope of the industry , as it continues to develop new platforms for hybrid delivery and new methods of working . As ever , money talks and new big players are entering our markets , and our event tech round up of mergers and acquisitions in the virtual event platform market highlights some of the big deals being done .
As we look to areas likely to return first , Switzerland and Korea are top of mind . We look at some Swiss sweet spot destinations with reputations for clean natural environments and take an Alpine amble across some of the high-end peaks for incentive planners .
Our occasional columnist Paul Cook , who will be organising MPI ’ s upcoming EMEC 2021 virtual conference , explains why event tech companies should be investing in bridging the gap in understanding .
And for those of you able to consider it , I extend an invitation to attend our primary UK MICE industry show , International Confex , which is in the diary for 22-23 June 2021 at ExCeL London . We hope it can rally the industry in person and show a lead back into the events uplands , providing a platform for the marketplaces of international business and knowledge exchange .
Stay safe .
