Choose Something New – Choose Gwangju , South Korea !

Gwangju is ready to be your next MICE destination . The historic centre of southwest Korea is known as the City of Light , and its balance of culture , history and nature make it a destination worthy of this glittering nickname . Situated in the southern Jeollanam-do province , the city is enclosed by lush mountain ranges , with sprawling lakes dotting the landscape . Beyond , you will find the sea , and within it the many islands of southern Korea .
Ask any Korean about Gwangju , and the first thing they will mention is its food . The country ’ s southern region is deeply proud of its status as the culinary heart of the nation ; the dishes on offer at even the smallest of side-alley eateries never fail to imprint themselves on the memory of diners .
Food is also intrinsically connected to Gwangju ’ s history – 1980 saw the May 18 Uprising , in which students within the city rose up to protest the authortiarian regime . Locals gathered outside their homes and prepared rice balls to feed the protestors , and rice balls have been symbolic to the people of Gwangju ever since .
The dictatorship responded to the protests with brutal force , but their efforts were not in vain – the demonstrations kickstarted a process that ultimately led to the democratization of Korea in the late 80s . Today , 40 years removed from the Uprising , the echoes of history can still be heard reverberating around the city .
A number of unique places are available for meetings in Gwangju . Guests can immerse themselves in Asian culture at the recently constructed Asian Culture Center , whilst a truly unique facility ready to be utilised is the Wolbong Seowon – traditional Korean architecture speaks to the longevity of this site : built in 1578 , the aristocracy of the Joseon dynasty studied here in
preparation for their civil servant examinations .
Surrounded by nature , Gwangju also offers plenty of opportunities for rest and relaxation , charmingly referred to as healing time in Korean . Mudeung mountain – a UNESCO Global Geopark – towers over the city , whilst the serenity of Gwangju Lake Eco Park has turned the place into a firm favourite for locals looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life .
As the world begins its recovery from the novel coronavirus , why not take this opportunity to experience something new ? South Korea has been lauded around the world for its exemplary response to the pandemic , so you can rest assured that your health and safety will be in good hands . Make your choice the historic city of Gwangju – a new destination that will leave a lasting impression .
