CCA always presages its annual
city and country rankings with
a plea to look beyond the
listings to get a full picture. Our
report (pages 26-27) summarises these latest
results and adds in an extra layer from
ICCA’s subsequent data on delegate numbers,
which offers an extra dimension.
Destinations, venues and organisers
looking for something extra to attract
business would do well to heed the
sustainability and recycling example set by
IMEX Group. As our cover story shows,
there are not only impressive savings to be
made, but good examples to follow and
evidence that forcing the pace of change to
greener behaviour does produce results and
rarely incurs pushback.
And it would seem the pace does have to be
forced – not just because of alarming

evidence on global warming, but some of our
Greenest warriors are looking for much more
than window dressing and White Papers
from our industry associations.
What we must remember is associations
are quick to expand time, energy and
resource to build their brands (and
membership) but are more reticent generally
in speaking out on the need for real change.
Some policies on environmental and
sustainability issues, frankly, are little more
than box ticking.

One area where our industry associations
deserve credit is in co-operation projects like
the new Global Alliance announced between
famous acronyms AIPC, ICCA and UFI.

among the common pool of potential
members, it makes so much more sense to
collaborate rather than duplicate.
CMW’s horizons have certainly been
broadening in past weeks, with tree-planting
in Patagonia; K-pop and meetings Gangnam
style in Korea and a taste of ECEF education
in Washington.
Our journalists are also in India, Russia
and Prague in coming weeks. Do keep all
