Amundsen Project
and research organisations ? “ We have a long history of international collaborations . Starting from the early days of the Amundsen with the Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study in 2003-2004 , to the ArcticNet network ( 2004-today ) and several collaborations with with USA , Japan , Norway , Russia , France , Germany , and many other countries . A notable recent example is the Green Edge project .
“ Arctic research cannot be done by only one country , it is truly a team effort given the costs and logistics associated with this type of research . The international network is enriched through international science conferences and workshops , within which new projects can be developed . International collaboration is key to the success of Arctic research . Another good example is the Arctic Research Icebreakers Consortium ( ARICE ) to which the Amundsen belongs and that enables European scientists to board the ship .”
What role have scientific conferences played in growing your
organisation ’ s influence and do you think the Amundsen project has proven to be a draw for Quebec in terms of conferences and events ? The international Arctic Change conference held partly in Québec , as well as many other international research conferences worldwide ( Arctic Frontiers , Arctic Science Summit Week ), have enabled the development of innovative projects and have strengthened collaborations . These events are key to the planning and implementation of research . For example , a conference will be organised with many side meetings and workshops . The venue provides a platform to meet , network and share in addition to learning .”
What are your goals for the short and long term with the project ? “ Our goal for the next few years is to further strengthen the international user base of the Amundsen and consolidate collaboration between Canadians and international scientists . We are also investing to update the science pool of equipment to keep the ship at leading edge

of arctic and marine research , for example with a new remotely operated vehicle , new sonars and additional autonomous underwater vehicles . We are also working towards the development of a plan to ensure a successor to the Amundsen in the years to come as the ship is aging .”
