FREDERICTON IS THE CAPITAL of New Brunswick and sits astride the Saint John River / Wolastoq . As a provincial capital , its economy is tied to the public sector ; which employs many of the 60,000 inhabitants ; but contains a growing IT and commercial sector . The city has the highest percentage of residents with post-secondary education in the province and offers a communitywide free wireless network . In September Fredericton was announced as Atlantic Canada ’ s First 5G City and it boasts some of the best internet connectivity in North America .
The city offers a mix of public and for-profit universities . The public University of New Brunswick ( UNB ) is the oldest English language university in Canada and was founded by a group of Loyalists who left the US . UNB is the seat of 11 Canada Research Chairs and home to 60 research centres and institutes . UNB has also been awarded the most entrepreneurial university in Canada by Startup Canada .

University of New Brunswick houses 85 academics whose research is oceanrelated . partner with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory , is a global leader in powered prosthetic research and developing MRI technology and is home to one of the leading motion analysis labs in North America , as well as the Institute of Biomedical Engineering , the world ' s first research centre in dermoskeletics . The institute is also the region ' s prosthetic fitting centre where amputees are fitted with ‘ intelligent ’ artificial limbs .
Also part of the UNB is the Canadian Rivers Institute ( CRI ) founded in 2000 as a centre of excellence in river sciences . The mandate of the CRI is to conduct research focusing on rivers to promote the conservation , protection and sustainable use of water , and to educate professionals , graduate students and the public on water sciences . And UNB isn ’ t just strong in science and technology ; because so many of UNB ' s academics have produced celebrated poetry , the city of Fredericton has earned the nickname ‘ Poets ' Corner ’.
UNB also houses 85 academics whose research is ocean-based or ocean related . They work closely with leading organisations in the city including Teledyne CARIS , global experts in software for the marine GIS community .
