CAIRNS:

WHERE NATURE BECOMES THE ULTIMATE RESEARCH LABORATORY

Nestled between two UNESCO World Heritage-listed ecosystems – the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest – Cairns Convention Centre is a world-class venue sitting amid nature’ s pristine playground, offering delegates not just a venue, but a gateway to living laboratories where they can step directly from keynote presentations into the very ecosystems they’ re studying.

The Centre offers an auditorium accommodating 2,300 delegates, an arena seating 5,000, and 23 meeting rooms for breakout sessions. It has a stunning terrace overlooking Trinity Inlet, lobbies for predinner functions, and a ballroom for 500 guests. It is located in the only place in the world where‘ rainforest meets reef’.
For academic and professional associations, particularly in environmental science, health and conservation, this proximity to world-class research environments is transforming how conferences deliver value. The Centre ' s team bring expertise across event management and services, but what sets them apart is their ability to mobilise the entire Cairns community to create memorable experiences for delegates.
The concept of Cairns as a‘ living laboratory’ gained powerful momentum during the 20th International Bat Research Conference( IBRC) in August 2025. More than 400 global experts in bat biology and conservation didn’ t just discuss their research in abstract terms – they experienced it first-hand. Field trips to the Tolga Bat Hospital, Cattana Wetlands and the Daintree Rainforest allowed researchers to engage directly with the region’ s 44 native bat species in their natural habitats.
Delegates stood beneath rainforest canopies at dusk, watching native species emerge from roosts and listened to conservationists explain microbat echolocation.
This immersive approach to conference programming reaches new heights with the International Conference on Mycorrhiza( ICOM2026), scheduled for 12 – 17 July 2026 at the Centre. The biennial event will make its first appearance in Tropical North Queensland, bringing together over 500 delegates from more than 40 countries.
The choice of Cairns as host city is particularly apt. While Australia is renowned for its iconic fauna, beneath the soils of this beautiful continent lies an even greater diversity of life. Mycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, supporting forests, grasslands and agriculture. Thanks to this rich ecological foundation, Australasia boasts one of the highest per capita concentrations of mycorrhizal researchers in the world.
ICOM2026 will feature more than 230 scientific talks and field-based workshops will allow delegates to connect laboratory findings with real-world applications.
Janet Hamilton, general manager of Cairns Convention Centre, says:“ The combination of our world-class facilities and the incredible biodiversity of the region provides a powerful platform for meaningful collaboration. Delegates can expect an unforgettable conference experience, insidethe Centre and out in the natural environment that makes this place so special.”
The living laboratory concept extends beyond environmental sciences into healthcare and clinical practice. The ANZCA Annual Scientific Meeting in May 2025 demonstrated how regional strengths can elevate academic programming, with over 1,900 delegates and 263 speakers benefiting from deep collaboration between national experts and local institutions. Cairns Hospital and local anaesthetists contributed to scientific sessions, while field experiences included visits to James Cook University and Cairns Aquarium, where delegates explored turtle conservation and anaesthesia in marine species.
Underpinning these experiential offerings is substantial research infrastructure, particularly at the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine( AITHM) at James Cook University.
The Centre’ s collaborative team and the passionate support of the entire city ensure that events feel deeply connected to place rather than generic hotel ballroom experiences. n
