An avid golfer, Artagnan Rodriguez
spends a lot of time in the sun. He reli-
giously uses sunscreen and always wears
a hat, but he recently noticed an unusual
spot on the top of his ear. He met with his
Kaiser Permanente primary care provider
who decided it warranted further review
by a dermatologist. Instead of sending
Artagnan home with a referral slip and an
uncertain diagnosis, the doctor sent a de-
scription to the dermatologist via secure
messaging while Artagnan waited. An
electronic referral was completed in real
time, and Artagnan headed down the hall
to the specialist’s office. Once he arrived,
a biopsy was taken. The results came
back in two days and were transmitted to
Artagnan shortly after.
