AWARDS TINY HOME/ADU COMPETITION WINNERS AIA Central Valley Emerging Professionals invited their peers, AIA architects and local students to share their innovation, creativity and vision by designing a tiny home or accessory dwelling unit (ADU) and entering their concept into competi- tion to benefit the E49 Corporation for its flexible supportive housing program. The competition was an opportunity for the architectural community to provide direct solutions to Sacramento’s affordable housing shortage. There were three top awards bestowed in the Emerging Professional, Architect and Student categories, as well as to three Honorable Mentions. The public is invited to tour Unity Home, built by The E49 Foundation, during Experience Architecture. Please see page 16 for more information. RENDERING BY LPA INC. AIA PROJECT UNITY HOME 112 comstocksmag.com | 201 7 9 “Our concept was to create a feeling of openness and brightness. The back of the home can be entirely opened up: The back wall is a set of horizontal double doors that open up and down to create a shaded canopy and balcony space. Elements in the home can be readily stowed away and provide flexibility. For example, the countertop in the kitchenette can be folded away to create more space, and a second table folds into the wall in the living space. The kitchenette is elevated to allow the bed to be stored beneath, which can be rolled out into the living space when the resident wants to sleep. A composting toilet is tucked within the cabinetry at the back side of the kitchenette and hidden behind a bifold door. When open, the bifold separates at a 90-degree angle to create a small private room.” n SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SUPPLEMENT
