WEST VALLEY COLLEGE DISTRICT FACILITIES AND MAINTENANCE BUILDING

This new LEED NC Gold facility is a demonstration of how
an often-overlooked program on many colleges can become
a model of energy efficiency and cost-effective sustainable
building practices for the entire campus. Since passive sys-
tems pay the biggest long-term benefits, the project uses op-
erable windows, exterior louvers, Solatubes, ceiling fans and
concrete masonry units to create an integrated passive sys-
tem that promotes daylighting, natural ventilation and ther-
mal lag properties. These passive systems are paired with
an efficient building envelope and MEP systems resulting

in a project that is 42 percent better than the LEED bench-
mark for energy cost and beats the relevant 2030 Challenge
benchmark for new construction and major renovations with
a 79 percent energy and carbon reduction.
