AWARDS ARCHITECTURA OBSCURA PHOTOGRAPHY & INSTAGRAM COMPETITION In 2012, I helped launch the Architectura Obscura architectural photography competition through the American Institute of Architects, Central Valley Chapter. The goals of the competition are simple: increase awareness of architecture and design; provide a stronger connection of non-architects to the profession of architecture; and provide a creative outlet that can be experienced by all who participate. This year, the competition focuses on the concept of alternative vantage points as a way to look at buildings differently. Viewing buildings from an alternative perspective, angle or vantage point allows us to experience the built environment in a new and unique way and provides an interesting challenge to the competition participants. This challenge has resulted in the submission of dozens of high-quality images, and I trust that you will enjoy the results! While our traditional gallery-quality print submissions are an important part of Architectura Obscura, we now also include digital submissions through Instagram as an important facet of the competition. Between the two submission options, we received nearly 500 architectural images from artists who range in experience from hobbyist to professional — engaging all levels of photographers in competition.
