In California, 11% of young people fail to graduate from high school on time, 15% of high school youth have been involved in a physical fight and 39% of children are overweight or obese. At the Boys & Girls Club of El Dorado County Western Slope, 95% of our teen-aged members expect to graduate from high school, 87% expect to complete some kind of post-secondary education, 49% of our teen members volunteer in their community at least once per month and 78% of our Club members get at least an hour of physical activity a day. The Boys & Girls Club of El Dorado County Western Slope has been serving the youth of El Dorado County for more than 20 years. We started as a single Clubhouse housed in an old Placerville armory building serving fewer than 40 children a day. We have since grown to serving more than 500 children between the ages of 5 and 18, over 65% of whom are financially disadvantaged attend the Club daily at one of our four sites across the Western Slope: Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Georgetown and Pollock Pines. Our home is now a 15,000 sq. ft. facility, “The Jim & Maureen Carter Family Boys & Girls Club.” Without the support of the Carter family and the incredibly generous El Dorado County community, our organization would only be able to serve a small fraction of the children we serve today. Our mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Every child who walks through our doors receives a first class youth development experience that focuses on academic success, good character & citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. In 2019, the Club served over 140,000 homemade meals, delivered thousands of hours of STEM learning, fine arts, computer instruction, music, sports, gardening, cooking, financial literacy and recreation programming, and provided oneon-one mentoring to hundreds of children. At the Boys & Girls Club of El Dorado County Western Slope, we do “Whatever it takes” to ensure that GREAT FUTURES START HERE. “Our Club and this entire community is better off because of Jim Carter and Carter-Kelly, Inc. His desire to help the Club comes from his own experience as a Club kid in Richmond. He has made a point to ensure the community he lives in has a safe and positive place for young people to learn and grow.” SEAN McCARTNEY CEO, Boys & Girls Club of El Dorado County Western Slope TO LEARN MORE OR SUPPORT THE CLUB PLEASE VISIT WWW.BGCE.ORG July 2020 | comstocksmag.com 91
