Stockton is providing opportunities
and funding to businesses to bolster
the city’s growth
by Jennifer von Geldern
S
tockton’s economic evolution in the last several years has
been dramatic. The 13th largest city in California made head-
lines in 2012 when it filed for bankruptcy and again in 2018
when it became one of the most fiscally solvent cities in the nation.
The city government continues to work with businesses, entrepre-
neurs and nonprofit organizations to create more opportunities.
“Stockton has a lot going on,” says Carrie Wright, the city’s
economic development director. “We have a strong focus on our
downtown core right now and exciting things happening, including
new businesses and new residences. We have strong programs to
stimulate and support the business community, and we’re working
with several other entities that support businesses and entrepre-
neurs.”
