Redtail Technology completed renovating
its Sacramento headquarters in 2017, a
28,000-square-foot space in two ware-
houses that were formerly separated by
a concrete wall, now joined by a seamless
Herculite glass door. Designed to reflect
the company’s brand and playful culture,
Redtail’s lobby incorporates red accents of
its logo and uses sharp, dramatic lines and
geometric patterns “meant to interpret the
heartbeat of technology and how it’s always
shifting,” says Amber Kelly of RMW Archi-
tecture & Interiors, which designed the
space. Named after CEO Brian McLaugh-
lin’s red-tailed golden retriever, Redtail
also encourages employees to bring their
dogs to the office and partners with Front
Street Animal Shelter to foster a dog for the
office, “though an employee always ends
up adopting the dog,” says Kelly. Redtail’s
otherwise open, breakaway work space
was created with tall tables to encourage
collaboration and designed with lighter col-
ors to create a natural separation from the
lobby. A mezzanine with dimmed lighting
and hammocks offers employees more pri-
vacy, and a steel slide provides a quick de-
scent. For additional relaxation and repose,
Redtail’s red-accented game room — from
the cushions on the couch to the tips of the
ceiling fan — offers employees an opportu-
nity to bounce pingpong balls or wave the
controls of a Wii, while enjoying a fun and
colorful mural by Berkeley-based artist Ni-
gel Sussman. n
