Runners need to raise a minimum of R5000 each. This will ensure that they get to start in their own special seeding batch near the front of the field as well as an exclusive goodie bag at registration. Runners log on to their entry profile on www.comrades.com, select the charity drive and choose one of the six Amabeadibeadi charities to run for. They can then create their own fundraising page and begin their fundraising efforts. UNOGWAJA 2014 – FOLLOWING PHIL Last year marked the third edition of the Unogwaja Challenge, which was initiated to follow the footsteps of Comrades legend and 1931 Comrades winner, Phil Masterton-Smith, who was affectionately known as ‘Unogwaja,’ which means ‘The Hare’ in Zulu. In 1933, Phil couldn’t afford the train fare to run the Comrades, so he cycled over 1700km from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg and ran Comrades the next day – finishing in 10th position! Today, that great feat is re-enacted by the Unogwaja team that cycle the distance in 10 days while running Comrades on day 11. In 2014, the Unogwaja Challenge is hoping to raise R1 million, and all donations will go to the Amabeadibeadi charities.
