MESSAGES
Message from the Chairperson Of the Comrades Marathon Association

MQONDISI NGCOBO

As we approach the 98th edition of the Comrades Marathon, I extend warm greetings to all of our esteemed athletes, passionate spectators, generous sponsors, partners and all stakeholders who contribute so much to the world’ s biggest, oldest and most famous ultramarathon. As the Chairperson, I take pride and pleasure on behalf of the CMA Board, staff and the Race Organising Committee in conveying a very warm South African welcome in the spirit of ubuntu amid the palpable excitement and camaraderie that envelop this iconic event.

The Comrades Marathon, as we all know it, is a gruelling ultramarathon journey that transcends mere athletic competition. It is a celebration of human resilience, determination, and the indomitable spirit that unites us all. It is the epitome of the persevering spirit and endurance that all our participants embody throughout the journey between the two cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Whether you are a seasoned Comrades veteran or a first-time participant, you are part of a legacy that stretches back to 1921 – a legacy etched in sweat, tears and unwavering commitment.
At precisely 05h45, the first start gun will sound and our Start Group 1 runners will surge forward, their hearts echoing the rhythm of thousands who have gone before them. Fifteen minutes later, Start Group 2 will follow them onto the Comrades Marathon route, as we introduce a split start for the first time in the history of the race. By the time the sun rises on Sunday 8 June, casting its golden glow upon the start line where more than 22,000 athletes were assembled, the 98th edition of The Ultimate Human Race will be well underway. The finish line awaits until 18h00, when the last runner will cross it, triumphant and exhausted.
This year, we embark on the 49th Down Run, a challenging descent from Pietermaritzburg’ s City Hall to the new street finish line at People’ s Park in the City of Durban The undulating hills, the whispering eucalyptus trees, the winding roads lined with crowds of jubilant spectators all bear witness to the stories etched into the very fabric of this race and our colourful, vibrant country. As you run down to Durban, remember that each step carries you not only toward the finish line, but also into the annals of the Comrades Marathon’ s rich history.
No other race in our country or anywhere in the world transmits the uniting spirit of‘ ubuntu,’ an isiZulu word that encapsulates our interconnectedness, our shared humanity and the unwavering concept of camaraderie, which is woven into the fabric of this race. Whether you are a runner, spectator or volunteer, you just need to look around you: The camaraderie, the smiles, the encouraging pats on the back, the screaming cheers of support, the raucous laughter, the joy of giving – be it a sachet of water or a banana – they all carry with it the very essence of ubuntu. When you falter, draw strength from your fellow runners. When you triumph, share that victory with them. For in this race, we draw on each other’ s strengths and in the spirit of camaraderie and triumph, edge closer to the finish line, stronger together!
To our first-time runners, I convey a heartfelt welcome! You stand on the precipice of an extraordinary adventure. Remember, the Comrades spirit resides not only in the seasoned legs, but also in the wide-eyed wonder of novices. Cherish every blister, every ache, every hill and every breathtaking view. They are your initiation into a lifelong fraternity.
As you approach Durban, visualise that iconic finish arch— the gateway to glory. It’ s not just a physical marker; it’ s a testament to your courage, endurance and unwavering commitment. When you cross under it, know that you’ ve etched your name into the living history of The Ultimate Human Race.
To our spectators lining the route, you are the heartbeat of this race. Your cheers, banners, and unwavering support all propel our runners forward. Wave your flags, shout their names, and be the wind beneath their wings.
I express an immeasurable amount of gratitude to our sponsors, suppliers and stakeholders, who contribute annually to the success of the Comrades Marathon. I also ask that we honour all those who have blazed the trail before us – the legends, the best-time breakers and the everyday heroes and heroines who embody the spirit of the Comrades Marathon. May your footsteps echo theirs, and may this race be stamped on your hearts forever.
Runners, spectators, supporters, volunteers: This is More than a Race – Isiko Mpilo, and the 98th edition of The Ultimate Human Race, will be our best one yet!
