Bring to mind a time when you failed to meet your own expectations and reacted harshly to yourself, or a
current situation in which you feel you might fail to meet expectations. (pause for 1 to 2 minutes)
Imagine someone you love dearly telling you about a similar situation and their own feelings of self-
judgment. What would you say to them? (pause for 1 to 2 minutes)
Do you think these same things would apply to you in your situation? Why or why not? (pause for 1 to 2
minutes)
Although the outcome may not have changed, how would your assessment of the outcome have been
different if you had set more realistic expectations for yourself? How would your sense of well-being have
been different if you had set more realistic expectations for yourself? (pause for 1 to 2 minutes)
Consider the benefits of setting realistic expectations for yourself. (pause for 1 to 2 minutes)
As we draw our meditation to a close, let's shift our attention to the sensations of the body. Pay attention
to any pleasant or neutral sensations. (pause 1 minutes)
As we conclude, you may add a resolve statement or a dedicatory wish at this time, and then when you are
ready, you can gently open your eyes. This concludes the practice. You may choose to journal about any
insights that arose during the practice.
