New players aim for new countries but will have difficulties competing with Intuitive With Intuitive Surgical ’ s market dominance , local companies have been unable to enter the field . With recent patent expiration we may see more localised companies in Asia and Europe bring their own systems to market . Many companies are well funded and come from medical device and technology sectors . Innovative features such as modularity and an ability for the robot to self-attach different tools could reduce staffing requirements in a time where staffing shortages is at an all-time high in healthcare . Despite patent expiration , intuitive surgical have continued their market dominance with the number of installations in Europe and Asia growing at a CAGR of c . 15 % since 2014 and now install more systems per year than competitors have systems installed ( Table 20 ). There is a lack of incentives for surgeons to change systems and we foresee Intuitive ’ s dominance continuing . Smaller companies need to target niches , new geographical areas to overcome difficulties entering healthcare systems . One method will be to target private hospitals and users individually with incentives , but this remains a difficult path .
