When we talk about Objectification most people think of feminism and how modern culture all around the world seems to boil women down to objects of desire and lust. We can see examples of this all over the place, in books, in films, on television, on advertisements and other places. This breaks women down to being nothing more than objects and takes away all of their value, this leads to so many problems such as abuse, rape, body image problems and much more. I want to take the time to talk to talk about one problem that most people don’t even think of, how objectification affects the transgendered community.
Objectification of both men and women leads to people seeing sex and gender as a very binary thing, it leads to the false idea that gender is summed up by one of two things. A massive misconception is that your gender is defined by what you have between your legs, this is not true. A penis does not make you male just as a vigina does not make you a women in terms of gender. Your gender is your personal identification, I like to think of it as the sex of your brain. The problem with objectifying people is that men are seen in terms of their penis and women in terms of their breasts and vigina which, needless to say, is a very unhealthy attitude.
I think a very good example of this would be myself, I have a penis yet I am not male. I am bi-gender, I am male and female and this is in no way defined by my body. I want for a world where peoples gender identity, pronouns and preferred names are all used without issue however that is not the case so I will try and education people as much as possible and I think thats the best way to go about it. Fighting rudeness with manners and education!
